Painful Calluses Need Treatment.

Calluses are build-ups of hard skin typically found underneath the weight-bearing surfaces on the bottom of the foot. They are typically caused by uneven distribution of weight or wearing improperly-fitted shoes. When calluses become too thick, they can become painful. In these instances, it makes sense to see a podiatrist.

Most people have some degree of callus formation on the soles of their feet and generally do not cause any issues. Calluses can also form around the heel, which can lead to fissuring of the callus, a painful condition. Some people use the terms “corns” and calluses” interchangeably, although they are technically different.

Wearing properly-fitted shoes with shock-absorbing soles can help alleviate pressures on the foot that can lead to calluses. If you do suffer from calluses, try to avoid leather shoes or other hard-soled shoes that do not provide adequate cushioning. Insoles can also help a bit.

DO NOT try to cut off a callus yourself. This can lead to severe consequences. Instead, self treatment typically consists of soaking the area in warm water for 10-15 minutes and gently rubbing with a pumice stone.
